His Early Life & Victory Over Goliath

A Young, Humble Warrior

Dawud (AS) was a young, humble shepherd who joined the army of Prophet Talut (Saul) against the tyrannical Goliath (Jalut).

At a time when the Children of Israel were oppressed by Goliath and his army, Dawud (AS), despite his youth and lack of military experience, possessed immense faith and courage.

"And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, 'Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people.'" (Quran 2:250)

The Defeat of Goliath

With Allah's help, Dawud (AS) miraculously defeated the mighty Goliath, using only a sling and stones.

While the armies hesitated, Dawud (AS) stepped forward, trusting completely in Allah. He struck Goliath with a stone from his sling, bringing down the giant and turning the tide of the battle. This victory brought him great fame and respect among his people.

"So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath; and Allah gave him the kingship and wisdom and taught him from that which He willed." (Quran 2:251)

His Prophethood & Kingship

Blessed with Prophethood & Kingship

Allah bestowed upon Dawud (AS) both the gift of prophethood and the authority of kingship.

This dual role made him a unique figure among the Children of Israel, allowing him to guide his people spiritually and govern them justly. His reign was marked by peace and prosperity.

"And We strengthened his kingdom and gave him wisdom and decisive speech." (Quran 38:20)

The Revelation of Zabur (Psalms)

Allah revealed to Dawud (AS) the holy book known as Zabur (Psalms).

The Zabur contained wisdom, admonitions, and praises of Allah. It is distinct from the Torah, which was revealed to Musa (AS). Dawud (AS) was known for his beautiful recitation of the Zabur, which would make mountains and birds join him in glorifying Allah.

"And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have preferred some of the prophets over others, and to David We gave the book [of Psalms]." (Quran 17:55)

His Miracles & Divine Gifts

Allah granted Prophet Dawud (AS) several unique miracles and divine favors.

Softening of Iron

One of his miracles was the ability to soften iron in his hands, allowing him to fashion armor without fire.

This divine gift enabled him to produce coats of mail (armor) that were both strong and flexible, providing superior protection in battle. This was a great blessing for his people.

"And We made the iron soft for him, [commanding him], 'Make coats of mail and calculate [precisely] the links, and work righteousness. Indeed, I am Seeing of what you do.'" (Quran 34:10-11)

Birds & Mountains Glorifying Allah

Mountains and birds would join him in glorifying Allah (Tasbih) whenever he recited the Zabur.

This was a testament to his beautiful voice and profound devotion. It shows Allah's power to make even inanimate objects and animals respond to His praise.

"Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, glorifying [Allah] in the evening and the sunrise. And the birds gathered, all with him reverting [to Allah]." (Quran 38:18-19)

His Wisdom & Justice

Wisdom in Judgment

Allah granted Dawud (AS) immense wisdom and the ability to make decisive and just judgments.

The Quran narrates an instance where he and his son Sulaiman (Solomon) were presented with a dispute regarding sheep. While Dawud (AS) initially gave one ruling, Sulaiman (AS) proposed an even wiser solution, which Dawud (AS) acknowledged. This shows his humility and pursuit of perfect justice.

"And David and Solomon, when they gave judgment concerning the field when the sheep of a people grazed therein by night; and We were witnesses to their judgment. And We gave understanding of the case to Solomon. And to each of them We gave judgment and knowledge." (Quran 21:78-79)

Upholding Justice

As a prophet-king, Dawud (AS) was commanded to rule with justice and uphold the truth.

His reign was a model of righteous governance, where he ensured fairness among his people and enforced Allah's laws. He was a just ruler who feared Allah.

"O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth; so judge between the people with truth and do not follow [personal] inclination, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allah." (Quran 38:26)
